QUESTION: What is the manufacturing time reduction compared to solution doping?
ANSWER:
The reduction in manufacturing time is significant, bringing time scales on the order of weeks to one day.To make preforms with relatively large diameter cores, solution doping takes multiple steps of about 1 days' time per step.A 3.0 mm diameter core may require as many as 15 separate solution doping operations where the preform must be taken off the lathe, filled with the doping solution, drained and dried, and then put back on the lathe to further dry and finally sinter the layer. Not only does it take a long time, but multiple handling steps, filling and draining etc.increases the probability of errors and/or accidents that can occur. With the Halide system, a 3 mm core can be deposited with 8 to 10 passes and the preform can be totally collapsed within one 8 hour shift.
